Portfolio Manager and Senior Wealth Advisor

As a child growing up in Cornwall, I had the benefit of reading Aesop’s Fables. Granted, in my youth these stories were frequently boring; however, they grew in value as I grew in age and understanding. To this day I can strangely draw on some of these

time-tested lessons of life. They apply to today as much as they did 2,500 years ago. In the timeless fables of Aseop, wisdom often arrives on the legs of dogs, fins of fish, or the wings of a bird. One such tale-the story of the Swallow and the Crow- offers a poignant lesson about trust, loyalty, and the value of a steady advisor through both sunshine and storm. Who knows what this coming year will bring, but I think this fable is timely.

In Aesop’s fable, the Swallow boasts of it’s beauty and usefulness to humans, especially in springtime. It mocks the Crow, whose dark feathers and harsh voice seem less appealing. The fanciful swallow tells the crow it is common and unwanted. But the Crow replies with quiet dignity: “ When winter comes, you will see who is truly valued. I am fed and sheltered, while you are cast out.”

The moral of this fable is clear: superficial charm may win favor in good times, but true worth is revealed in adversity, often showing up as old and boring. Old and boring is reliable because it is not a passing fad, but time-tested and well weathered.

The Advisor’s Role: More Than Seasonal Support

In business, leadership, or life, we often encounter “Swallows”-those who shine during periods of growth, celebration, or ease. They offer clever insights, ride the wave of success, and bask in the glow of favorable conditions. But when challenges arise-economic downturns, challenging markets, or financial crises-these fair-weather allies disappear, leaving us exposed and alone.

The “Crow” advisor, by contrast, may not dazzle with charisma or trendiness. But they bring something far more valuable: consistency, courage, and counsel that endures. They speak truth even when it’s uncomfortable. They remain present when others retreat. And they help clients navigate the cold winds of uncertainty with integrity and resilience.

Traits of a Trusted Advisor for all seasons

  • Steadfastness: They don’t flinch when the stakes are high or the path is unclear.

  • Moral clarity: They prioritize what’s right over what’s popular.

  • Strategic depth: They see beyond the moment, preparing for all seasons of life.

  • Empathy and candor: They balance compassion with honest feedback.

  • Loyalty: They support you, but won’t flatter you blindly.

Choosing Your Crow

As individuals going through life, you should ask yourself: Who advises us when the warmth turns cold and the sunshine gives way to dark clouds? Who helps us make the hard decisions, protects us, and carries us forward with confidence towards our goals in both good times and bad?

So next time you’re tempted by the song of the Swallow remember the Crow’s quiet strength. In the long arc of leadership, it’s not the seasonal beauty that sustains us- it’s the enduring wisdom of those who walk with us through every season.
